Since becoming a surveyor, I’ve noticed some disturbing trends during compliant and validation surveys that involve agencies that have “deemed” status. The purpose is to determine if a deemed provider is, in fact, following the COPs.
Validation surveys: Conducted after a survey by a deeming authority (accreditation organization).Compliant surveys: Conducted to investigate complaints that are submitted to the state from a variety of sources. The purpose is to determine if the plan of correction has been implemented and the provider is now in compliance with the COPs. Follow-up surveys: Conducted after a provider is cited with Condition-level deficiencies during a recertification survey.Recertification surveys: Conducted on a set schedule (frequency is determined by provider type) to establish that a provider continues to meet the COPs.State Licensure surveys: Conducted to determine compliance with state-specific regulations.
Is deemed status a federal oversight process professional#
Providers (term that refers to a health care organization, not individual health care professional the term “agency” may be used interchangeably in my practice area) must be in compliance with the Conditions of Participation (COPs) in order to participate in these federal programs.
